HISTORY

Though the Port Lavaca area was inhabited well before it was settled by Europeans, it wasn’t officially founded until 1841. At this time, it was called Lavaca and was settled by many Linnville citizens after the Linnville Raid of 1840. It became the county seat of Calhoun County in 1846 and, over the next few years, established itself as one of the busiest ports in the area.

While it saw a dip in its popularity as a port during the late 1800s, it was quickly back on its feet, growing significantly during the early 20th century with the expansion of railroads throughout Texas. The seafood industry became important to the town’s economy, along with tourism as the town’s tropical appeal spread. Now, Port Lavaca continues to thrive, offering visitors and residents alike a wide range of public parks, marinas, and resort-like accommodations that are sure to appeal.

THINGS TO DO

Go Birding

Calhoun County is a known migratory flyway for over 400 species of birds looking to head south for the winter. Because of this, the county has eight birding sites that are part of the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. That means you can catch sight of a range of birds in Port Lavaca — including the endangered Whooping Crane. So, grab your binoculars and head out to enjoy our wildlife.

Check Out Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse

The Halfmoon Reef Lighthouse is considered the oldest surviving wooden lighthouse structure in Texas. Its hexagonal shape is made mostly of cypress wood and was built in the late 1840s, helping ships make their way past the treacherous Halfmoon Reef. This historical structure is a great site to see.
